“NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A PHONE CALL OR A LETTER. EDUCATING YOURSELF IS A GREAT FIRST STEP, BUT NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF YOUR VOICE.”
GoAskAlex for Hustler Magazine
For her first time in print for Hustler Magazine, performer GoAskAlex shares the story of her time at Fairy Creek Blockade in Port Renfrew, British Columbia. Fairy Creek (ADA’ITSX) is a region made up of sacred old growth forests, and is home to the Marbled Murrelet as well as countless other endangered and at risk species. The Blockade takes place on the unceded territories of the Pacheedat and Ditidhat peoples.
As a Métis First Nations citizen of Canada, the blockade hits home for Alex. Having grown up seeing the importance of the ecosystem around her, Alex considers herself a staunch environmentalist – But for Alex, the blockade is about so much more than just the trees.
“Old growth forests are invaluable to our ecosystem, and we have seen how their loss has impacted our province in the last few years with violent forest fires, floods, and drought. More than that, this violent resource extraction is rooted in colonial violence. It is done without thought, and without consent. Assimilation did not end with residential schools and forced sterilization. Assimilation is all around us, in the way that we treat our Indigenous communities today. Cultural genocide is reinforced by the senseless destruction of our last Ancient Forests.”
